Silver Spring Networks Recognized For Leadership in Sustainability
Redwood City, CA, September 17, 2007 - Silver Spring Networks is being recognized as one of 14 leaders in sustainability with the Brilliant Innovations Award to be presented at Discover Brilliant 2007, an international conference taking place in Seattle, September 17 -19, 2007.
The Brilliant Awards celebrate innovative solutions that go beyond “green” to generate real economic value while mitigating negative environmental impact. Nominees were evaluated for their positive demonstration of economic value, environmental soundness, and security across a number of key criteria specific to each particular category. In the case of Brilliant Innovation categories, the value of the individual innovation to an adopter was assessed, and nominees were also evaluated based on their ability to impact their larger industry category as well.
Silver Spring Networks is receiving the Brilliant Innovations- Electric Grid Award for its work in creating the “Smart Grid” and for developing the Smart Energy Network that enables utilities to create the advanced infrastructure necessary to incorporate “green” energy into their existing systems.
“Increasing the efficiency of the current electrical grid and reducing demand will have a tremendous impact on the environment,” explains Scott Lang, President and CEO of Silver Spring Networks. “Increased grid efficiency translates to fewer generation plants. And, by enabling consumers to control how and when they use energy, they will reduce demand. Essentially, we are bringing Internet Protocol networking to utilities and their customers, transforming the way we deliver and use energy – the possibilities are endless.“
“In a world driven by economics, it is not enough to be considered ‘green’,” says P.S. Reilly, Conference Chair of Discover Brilliant 2007. “Mainstreaming sustainability requires approaches that bring more value as well as lower impact. As consumers, businesses and communities it is time to demand more from our investment decisions.”
Silver Spring Networks’ IP-based Smart Energy Network addresses the most formidable challenges of managing multiple applications and devices on the same network. The Smart Energy Network from Silver Spring Networks is based on proven technology for addressing, routing, service quality and other management functions. With an IP-based Smart Energy Network in place, a utility can “plug and play” any variety of devices, deploy consumer energy portals, perform intelligent load shedding, enable remote disconnect and more. By making the grid more efficient, the US could save over $3 billion annually and help drastically reduce carbon emissions.
